With the advent of summer, and temperatures rising, it is that time of the year when most of the dads call out their sons to change the pads of their swamp coolers. So, if you are one of those families using a swamp cooler, here are a few tips on how to get your swamp cooler ready for summer.

Start by taking off its sides

Getting your swamp cooler ready for summer is not an easy job. It may take time if you have not cleaned it since ages. Start the process by taking off the sides of the swamp cooling unit. It would require sliding the panels up and then out, after releasing the clip. Make sure you can identify and remember which panel belongs to which side, or else fitting them back again may create problems.

Clean it, remove the dust

Get ready to clean all the dust while it is dry. You may use a vacuum or any other cleaning product that can be used on these coolers. Getting rid of all the accumulated dust and dirt on the inside of the cooler is equally important in getting your swamp cooler ready for summer. If you last cleaned your cooler more than a year ago, you may find it tiring. Otherwise, it can be a matter of minutes.

Replace the pads

It is up to you whenever you want to change the pads of your water cooler; however, it is ideal you change them every year. These pads have the ability to absorb and hold water which is evaporated with the help of a fan blowing air across them. These pads tend to get old and stiff with time which makes it difficult for them to absorb water. So, it is best if you measure them and get new ones. Changing pads is an important part of getting your swamp cooler ready for summer.

Check the water line

If you have removed the drain plug while cleaning the unit, make sure you put it back again and tighten it, and then connect the water supply to the swamp cooler.

Check the pump and the flow of water

Before putting back the sides of the cooling unit you need to check the pump. If the water is flowing slowly there are chances that the pump may not actually be pumping or the lines are blocked. But if the water is flowing freely, it is an indication that the pump is working perfectly. No wonder, getting your swamp cooler ready for summer is not as easy as it sounds.

Finally, check the motor

Finally, you must check the motor, whether it is running fine or not. The fan wheels should be turning. Then, make sure you place the panels back on to their correct sides, securing the unit.

Once you have followed all these steps, your swamp cooler should be ready for summer.
